Yes, today was a shock…
The big boss quit. yup up and resigned… my boss’ boss handed in his resignation today. it kind of complicated my decision. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do. I’m trying to get an “audience” with the guy to find out what my standing is in the organization. if it’s good, I may consider staying, if bad or marginal, I walk.
Regardless of the questions I asked are answered by the potential new company, I’m thinking of the side benefits (as I down the second glass of Sweetwater Tavern’s Bishop’s Pass).
One: I’m closer to most of the folks I know in VA. Which allows for meetups in the evening.
Two: A good brew pub is less than a few miles away. Some place to have some fun for dinner, even thogh it’s not the cheapest in th world.
Three: The commute brings me through downtown DC. One of the things I’ve been complaining about Baltimore… absolutely nothing to do after work or, given a Silver Spring residence, nothing easy to do after work. So summers can be wrapped around the occasional kickball game, etc.
Four: Easier commute. I can try multiple forms of commuting, including the new acquisition. But it will take a few months to learn and get confident on it.
THere are plenty of other ancillary reasons, but those are the first few.
I’m really starting to lean, even though the e-mail received from the new company regarding my questions seemed a bit scary. I’m not a good test taker, so the idea of having to obtain a DISA and CISSP certification within 90 days and 6 months respectively scares the living shit out of me. I went to a college where there were a lot of brighter folks than I around, and failing (especially since my attempt for a masters program failed at my old alma mater) scares the living crap out of me. I guess I’m just worried a bluff, if any, will be called. I just now feel like, at least where I’m at, I’m the top technical dog, chief geek, nerd extraordinary. (Yes, i have the desk toys to prove it, as well as the receipts from Think Geek). I feel moving elsewhere, whatever it may be, will drop me a few notches.
the pay is good, so my new acquisition will be paid for, easily, but still… I’m trying to get a feel for my future.
